Tour of Historic Rocklin, Saturday, May 20th

We met at Brookfields on Sunrise and Folsom for breakfast. It was beautiful spring weather all day. The first leg of our journey took us along Folsom Blvd, Folsom-Auburn Road, some country roads and Rocklin Road to the Rocklin Museum. By the time we got to Rocklin there were 7 Fords and a Caddy in our group.

The Rocklin Museum is a completely restored 1910 Victorian home of the town doctor. Ruben Ruhkala gave us a tour of the grounds and basement full of interesting artifacts and tools used in the granite industry which made this little town the second largest metropolis in Placer County in the mid to late 1800’s. He is one of the last son’s (his father was born in 1869) of the Ruhkala family who owned and operated one of the largest and last functioning granite quarries. In the main museum area guide/docent Gay Morgan gave us a tour and chat about Rocklin’s history.
Leaving the museum we continued on our tour visiting the defunct Big Gun Quarry, stopping in old town Rocklin, with the historic St Mary’s Church in the soon to be Heritage Park and a final drive through parts of the J. Whitney estate. We then met for lunch at the Hacienda Del Roble on Granite Drive in Rocklin.
