RAG TIME FESTIVAL REPORT

Highway 16 was wearing it’s most colorful Sunday Best California look of oak-studded rolling hills, now coated with the yellow summer grasses. I was also treated to an additional display of beauty in my rear view mirror during our tour to Sutter Creek. !2 cylinders surrounded by a tone time Indianapolis Pace Car Yellow ‘48 Lincoln Continental Convertible smiling at me with it’s bright grill work winking in the bright morning sun.

Our North Star Allante V-8 does have some torque which is always looking for a place to e tested. Those undulating hills between Dry Town, Amador City, and Sutter Creek served well. Slowing to 15 mph at the bottom of the hill, then going for 55 mph on the upgrade. Surprisingly I was joined by Everett & Nelleen Davis, zooming right along with me in Edsel Ford’s masterpiece of form and Function. In Fact, what I asked Everett. “ Do you have an automatic?” (For I never saw his hands leave the wheel during those up hill drags.) Which he declined. There was some roll in that Continental, as we serpentined thru the hills. However it was a spectacular performance I had the pleasure to witness, watching the 58 year old product of Everett’s hands on restoration cruise thru it’s paces in my rear view mirror.

Now for the Sutter Creek Festival. It was also good. We were treated to a collection of toe taping tunes. From the upright pianist, an ice cream parlor filled with era dressed Rag Time Aficionados, including a soda jerk wearing an original straw hat, who refused to sell at any price. It has now survived it’s third generation of family wearers.

I t was a very pleasant day’s get away. I believe all enjoyed our tour. No breakdowns, no flat tires, no wrong turns, no vapor locks, and no overheating. Maybe it was because we had no V-8’s.
